How To Get A Wire Through Galaxy Seat Back

Hi All,

 

Finally decided to make the DVD players and screen "semi-permanent".

 

I cant fit them permanently as the car would get broken into and they would vanish :wub:

 

Currently we only use them on long journeys due to the time taken to strap the screens to the headrest and get all the cables in place and plugged in.

 

I have now designed a bracket for fixing to the headrest supports that has a multipin socket in it and the screens have been modified to get rid of the silly 6" tail and there is now a mactching multipin plug fixed to the bottom of the screen so it just slides onto the bracket and all connections are made.

 

The DVD players have been modified in a similar manner so there is now only a single lead to plug in for power and all AV connections.

 

My dilema is how to get the cable though the back of the driver and passenger seats. Does anyone have any experience of this and how difficult was it ?

 

Will try the local scrapyard to try and source a couple of the bushes that the headrests fit into as they would make a neat exit point for the cables.

not tried it yet but have you got the foldup tables in the back of the seats - if so it might make the job easy if you remove these so you can route the wire easily.

 

it might be worth removing the seats to get easy access for routing the wires. iirc it is only 4 bolts to undo and the seat will drop back out of the way - make sure any existing wires are unplugged or safe as you move the seat.

 

take pics when you do it and post for people to see how you managed.

I have done this with mine.

Firstly you need to take the seat out - unbolt at bottom and undo air bag and heating loom.

I put seat on its side and opened a wire coat hanger to its full length. I taped the end of the wire to it and was ready to go. You obviously cut a tiny hole in top of seat to insert wire - this will be covered by a rubber gaiter - bt if hole is small you wont notice it anyway.

Push down the coat hanger feeding it through with your hands - its quite tricky as you actually have to make a groove through the foam inserts(seats are not made with space for wire unless factory ordered)

Take it all the way through and out at bottom. A bit of hand manipulation and you wouldnt know its there.

There is one important point to remember

Go down the opposite side to the air bag !!!

 

Put seats back in place and off you go. I found I had to have the air bag warning light re set but this will only apparently happen if the ignition is turned on when seat is out.

It's a real bugger!!

 

If you want to have a go here's what to do.

 

1. Recline the seat as much as possible

2. You will see right at the bottom of the backrest, there is a clip mechanism that slots the front fabric to the rear fabric - unclip this (it's easier to run a blunt screw driver down the whole length.

3. Once unclipped, roll the backrest fabric as much as you can - this will be easier if you remove the aircraft style table if you have them.

4. Watch out for theside airbags if yuou have them - If you do, this will be the maximum you can roll up.

5. Remove headrest and one of the guides (the one you want to feed the cable down.

6. Using a straightened hanger, poke through the exposed headrest guide hole and carefully find a passage down the bak of the seat - this is not easy!

7. Once a pathway has been found, tape one end of the cable to the hanger and feed it through.

8. Trail wires accordingly and use cable yies to fix to the bottom of the seat using a channel taking the wires to the underside of the seat.

9. Fit the guide back - you can just push thsi down and let the fabric flex to accomodate the cable under the guide or you may wish to cut out a hole.

10. Roll down the seat cover and reclip the ties at the bottom - this is a real b*****d to do - it took two of us a lot of time to snap these back in.

11. You will need to take extra care if you have seat heaters - watch out for the heat pads in both the backrest and the seat pad.
